Connecting ChatGPT

ChatGPT connects to Naetive as a custom MCP server, in its Developer mode. No install. It can then read and write everything on Naetive; to let it work on files on your computer, share the project (below); the tunnel then starts by itself.

Do this on chatgpt.com in a browser: ChatGPT moves these menus often, so look for the words below rather than an exact place. An app added on the web reaches the ChatGPT desktop app too.

What you need

  • ChatGPT on a paid plan (custom MCP servers need one)
  • The server URL from the Connect page. Open the ChatGPT row (under Add another agent if it is not connected yet) and press Make a key for ChatGPT: ChatGPT gets its own key, inside the URL, shown once. Copy it straight away and share it with no one. Lost it? Make another; the old one stops working and your other agents are unaffected.

Step 1: Turn on Developer mode

Settings → Security and login → Developer mode. Without it, the option in step 2 does not appear.

Step 2: Create the server

Open Plugins (chatgpt.com/plugins) → Add → Create custom MCP server.

  • Name: Naetive
  • Connection: Server URL. Paste the URL from Connect.
  • Authentication: change it from OAuth to No authentication. Your key is inside the URL.
  • Tick I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin.

Added Naetive (or Memeri) before, or made a new ChatGPT key? ChatGPT cannot change the URL of one you already made. Create a new one as above, then remove the old one under Plugins → Personal → Created by you.

Step 3: Check it worked

Start a new chat (Chat, not Work), add Naetive from the + menu (under Developer mode) if it is not on, and ask "What's my current focus?" If it answers with your project, you are connected, and ChatGPT shows under Your agents on Connect.

Giving it your files

ChatGPT cannot see your computer on its own. It reaches files only through the tunnel, and only for projects you shared. The files stay on your computer; ChatGPT reads one when you ask it to, and what it reads travels to ChatGPT encrypted, the way pasting it would.

  • A new project: when you create it, tick Let ChatGPT and Claude on the web reach this folder. The box is off by default.
  • An existing project: one line in a terminal on that computer, from any folder: naetive share --project my-project. It finds the folder itself.

The tunnel then starts by itself in the background (on Windows, start it yourself: & "$env:USERPROFILE\.naetive\start-tunnel.cmd"). While it runs, ChatGPT can read and change the files in the projects you shared, and nothing else. Running commands stays off until you run naetive commands on on that computer, then confirm in your browser (macOS and Linux; not on Windows yet). See Sharing your projects and starting the tunnel.

Add the one-time instruction

So every chat starts grounded, add the instruction from Start a project with your AI to ChatGPT's custom instructions.

Other clients

Any other client that speaks MCP over HTTP uses the same server address, {{GATEWAY_URL}}/mcp, with a key sent in an Authorization: Bearer header.
